Secretary-General Suggests Meeting with Iraqi Council
18 December -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan told reporters today that, in his discussions with the Governing Council of Iraq, "I've suggested a meeting around 15 January, and I hope we'll be able to set or clarify what assistance and what role the United Nations can play and what they expect of us, and for us to make a judgement as to whether that can be done or not."

Annan Asks Colombian Parties to Take Steps for Reconciliation
17 December -- In a message for the holiday season, Secretary-General Kofi Annan called upon the parties to the conflict in Colombia to relieve the Colombian people from the suffering that has plagued the country over the last four decades. He urged that steps be taken to nurture reconciliation, respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.

Annan Says Chances Dimming of Finding Kuwaitis Alive
16 December -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan's latest report on Kuwaiti missing persons and property in Iraq says that the discovery of mass graves in Iraq is a gruesome and devastating development. While there is still hope, he says, the prospect of finding alive some of the 605 missing persons in question is diminishing.

Annan Says Hussein's Capture Provides Opportunity
16 December -- The capture of Saddam Hussein, Secretary-General Kofi Annan told Security Council members in an open meeting this morning, creates an opportunity for a new beginning in the vital task of helping the Iraqi people to take control of their destiny. While there may not be time, he went on to say, to hold credible elections before the restoration of sovereignty, it is essential that the process of setting up a transitional government be fully inclusive and transparent. No Iraqis should feel excluded, he added.

Annan Notes Results of Turkish Cypriot Voting
15 December -- The Secretary-General has seen the reports of the Turkish Cypriot voting. It appears that it may take some time for a new political dispensation to be established. The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to restate his position, which is that his plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem remains on the table but that he does not propose to take a new initiative without solid reason to believe that the political will necessary for a successful outcome exists.

Secretary-General Says Capture of Saddam Hussein Is Opportune
14 December -- The Secretary-General that the capture of Saddam Hussein, the epitome of the former regime, is an important event. It offers an opportunity to give fresh impetus to the search for peace and stability in Iraq, on the basis of an inclusive and fully transparent process. The Secretary-General reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to do everything possible to help Iraqis, if asked and as circumstances permit.

Secretary-General Stresses Universal Values in Lecture
11 December -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in a lecture delivered at Germany's Tubingen University, emphasized the importance of universal values, including non-violence, respect for life, tolerance and equal rights, saying that the values enshrined in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are no less valid today than when they were drafted half a century ago.

Annan Meets with German Chancellor in Berlin
11 December -- The Secretary-General is in Berlin, Germany, today, where he met with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. They discussed Afghanistan, Iraq, Cyprus, the Middle East, next year's conference in Bonn on renewable energy and UN reform. After the meeting, he told reporters at a press encounter that, as he has indicated to the parties in Cyprus, "my good offices are available the moment they show the will, the political will, to move forward and seek a settlement."

Secretary-General Names Acting Head of UN Iraq Mission
10 December -- The Secretary-General said in a report on Iraq that, until circumstances permit a full deployment of the UN international staff to Iraq, he will build up the UN Mission incrementally outside of Iraq. The bulk of the staff will be located in Nicosia, Cyprus, with a small office in Amman, Jordan. UN Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator Ross Mountain has been chosen by the Secretary-General to be his acting Special Representative for Iraq.

Annan Concerned about Liberia Disturbances
10 December -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed his concerns about recent disturbances following the launch of the disarmament program just outside Monrovia, the Liberian capital. The Secretary-General stressed that the leaders of the armed factions are responsible for the behavior of their combatants and called upon them to cooperate fully with the UN Mission in Liberia.

Secretary-General Calls for Inclusive Information Society
10 December -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Geneva today said it is "up to all of us to build an information society" as the World Summit on the Information Society opened in Geneva. He said, "An open, inclusive information society that benefits all people will not emerge without sustained commitment and investment."

Secretary-General Shocked by Terror Attack in Moscow
9 December -- The Secretary-General today was shocked to learn that the Russian Federation had been the victim of yet another act of terror, this time in Moscow, that resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians. Terrorism can never be justified, under any circumstances whatsoever.
